The last book to keep my interest up like this was Roger Zelazny’s Lord of Light. When I picked this book out I purposely looked for the non-stereotypical chic sci-fi that lined the shelves of the book store. The accusation of the characters being one dimensional is incredibly false. The reviewer reminds me of people who don’t like Adam Sandler movies but still paid $8 to go see Don’t Mess Withe The Zohan, came home and reviewed it as Sandler being a bad actor in another silly movie. People who don’t like this book must have no imagination what-so-ever and need to switch to television so they can have the imagery spoon fed to them.

I read this book a week ago, and I didnt remember it. I had to actually re-read the description on amazon to even remember what the book was about. Reading it kept me busy, and I finished the book so I must have been interested in it at the time, but needsless to say, this book is very forgettable and if there is another, I probably wont remember to go out and pick it up! Sorry!

It is a good question you pose….but perhaps it still works because of the three components it is made up of, which work on magical creatures regardless if their magical powers are enabled or not?? Just a thought…
I picked up the book while camping because someone had left it behind. I literally read it in a day too. Easy read, kind of predictable and cheesy, but still a good book. Good enough that I’m waiting for the sequel

I just can’t recommend this book. The author didn’t create a connection to the character for the reader. We really don’t even know what any of them look like. Everything in the book was vague. What exactly are her new “powers” – did she inherit them or did her uncle just put a protection around her and why does she suddenly feel like the new people she has met are like family? She says she is the black sheep of her family but there isn’t anything to draw us closer to her. She thinks her uncles death is good timing- hmmm- he always showed up to save her but she really couldn’t care until the end when she decides he is family and has to avenge him? No reason to really hate the bad guy except that we are told he is the bad guy- so of course we must hate him. I can suspend reality for the enjoyment of a good story but there were too many unanswered questions and a lot of repetition (too many of the same drawn out scenes in the house). I would recommend Jim Butcher- he knows how to develop a character.

Jayne is a bit of a black sheep in her family, she has very few friends, and an annoying ex boyfriend. Actually, she is on the verge of having to crash on someones couch for a place to stay when she learns that her uncle Eric died. Not only did he die, but he seems to have left a large amount of money and property all to Jayne. Uncle Eric was a bit of an outcast in the family as well, and Jayne mistakenly thought it was because he was gay. Turns out he wasn’t gay, but more of a demon hunter. The bad guys are called riders-spirits or demons that inhabit bodies. These come in a variety of types, and we don’t learn much more than that. One of the real big bad spirits is named Coin and he is suspected to have killed Eric. So Jayne teams up with some of Eric’s acquaintances to kill Coin.
That is pretty much the entire story. My problem with this book is that there isn’t enough unclean spirits. The plot is intriguing at first while we get to know the side characters and Jayne learns a bit about the spirits. At about page 100 or so the characters make their first attempt on Coin. Since it’s only page 100 they obviously fail. Then they make other attempts to succeed. I found myself not really caring about the details of their plan to kill the bad guy. The second half of the book was mostly complaining about their first failure, planning the next one, and then executing it. I want to know more about the other unclean spirits. Hunting one bad guy was not enough. The rest of the series may be better, and the characters certainly are interesting, though there wasn’t much of a cliff hanger or need to continue to read the series. I liked that this could be a stand alone, but it left me wanting more that I’m not sure subsequent books will deliver.
