This is a really dreadful book, and I’m sorry to have wasted my money and my time. Even one star is overrating it.

I like sci-fi and fantasy, love a good ghost story, am fascinated by theology. But this book upset me.
In a long history of ignorance, and denial of logic, reason or honesty, Ms. Brennen has encapsulated in this book every possible flaw and erroneous conclusion drawn by undereducated or narrow minded Christians. Thank God there are not many of that kind left.
In a grand mishmash of badly researched misinformation of Wicca, Vodun, mysticism, myth, and Christianity, I fear Ms. Brennen is set the stage for 21st century witch hunts. Had Ms. Brennen done ANY research on religions, never would she be incorporating christian devils and demons, or hell for that matter, into the Wiccan belief systems. Nor would she name Vodun as witchcraft, or call it “voodoo”, which is a Hollywood concept to sell movies.
Of her own words- “magic is bad”. But miracles are not magic? A babies laugh? A firefighter saving lives? A donation of clothes, food or shelter? A smile? A gentle touch for one in pain? I could continue. There is so much magic in this word, and we practice it every day.
And a “spell” spoken by a Christian is different than a “spell” spoken by any other religion? Christians form prayer chains or groups for the sick, and needy. Ooops, more magic, look out, here come the demons.
Then there is the practicality and reality of the religions. Practicing Wiccans do not actually believe they can turn their foes into frogs. Unless they need their meds adjusted. Much like the lunatics who say God has told them to murder children in their sleep. You get nuts in every group.
Books such as this frighten me. Not because of the scary ghosties and ghoulies, but because of the sheer and unadulterated hatred of “those who are not just like us”.

I normally like books in this genre, but found myself appalled and insulted. All the “B movie” stereotypes from the ’50s and ’60s were indulged in shamelessly. This and other books like it, perpetuate the hateful and ridiculous notions that continue to oppress gifted and eccentric women who own their own power, and do not bow to oppression from a church that has done it’s best to keep us cowed and weak through the ages. Grow up, Ms. Brennan. This kind of tripe insults the profession of writer.

I am a huge fan of Ms. Brennan. However, this novel was not for me. I did not know it was going to be a “Paranormal Romance”??? Now, if you like that type of book, then you probably will love it. I could not make it half way. I was so confused as to who everyone was and where was the suspense????? I picked it back up last night and tried to finish it, but just could not do it. I hope we don’t have 6 more to look forward to in this series. I will have to bypass those. I loved all of her other novels, but this was not my cup of tea.

Ms. Brennan is an excellent writer and story teller. Her characters are well developed and her story line believable. What bothers me is that Moira, the main character was not permitted to use her own magical abilities to fight for the good. The storyline throughout the entire book is presented in such a way that all witches are seen as evil and bad and all magic is likewise evil and bad. This is character assasination to all real witches who are following their own religion that has nothing to do with satan or demons. Witches follow the “harm none” directive and focus on loving nature and helping mankind. I think it is wrong to present this population in such a derogatory manner.
