During the “folk music-scare” of the early 1960s, a bunch of white middle-class youths with names like the Greenbriar Boys and the Even Dozen Jug Band discovered the mountain music of the Stanley Brothers, Skillet Lickers, and Uncle Dave Macon and set about introducing it to the country’s college kids. Four decades later, the members of OCMS fit the profile of those early revivalists, yet if anything they have tapped deeper into the primal elements of an American art form. Did another reviewer mention “Man of Constant Sorrow? I think they did. That should tell you how commercial this crap is. I agree with the earlier review. Sold out. Buy some Uncle Dave Macon instead.

And they can almost play those things now.

Ok, they’re kinda fun, it’s true. But like Gillian Welch to Hazel Dickens, it’s more mimicry than music.

And also like Welch, for all the careful posing, there’s a certain sterility to the whole package.

Carefully off-key just enough in the appropriate places.

It wears a little thin and feels a little hollow in the end.

Almost all the right poses, just lacking a little genuine soul.

Hey, maybe Will Oldham’s got a little left over in an old fruit jar he can sell ‘em.

Take some of the best musicians around. Remove their desire to do anything original. You have the Old Crow Medicine Show!

Extremely polished. Way, way too polished. And why wouldn’t it be? They’ve been doing this same act for years.

This is the kind of music you just love — for a little while.

The sad thing is that these guys could have made a difference. They are that good. But they chose this easy way out.

The cuteness of the whole thing makes them a sort of walking tourist trap.

If you can track down some of their independent albums, check those out instead. They used to explode with energy. This is polished Nashville CRAP! Before they sold out, I’d compare them with the great Gus Cannon. Looks like they’ll soon be on tour with The Dixie Chicks or possibly Creed. Corporate music has ruined another band. Buy something else.

These guys are too young to sound like old hillbilies. I was looking for a little bit more current genre.
