I had seen this book a couple of times in a bookstore, and I had read the back cover and placed it again on the shelve both those times thinking this book didn’t sound appealing to me. Then I checked the good reviews it does have here, and I bought it. Only to read it until I reached the third chapter, deciding also in this chapter that this book was way to dense to enjoy it, at least for me, and find it lacking some characterization of the characters as well as from the world in which they live.
I got bored by it and found myself skirming alonside its pages to get to some dialogue, to some place that would move the action forward. It was then that I decided stop reading it and went for another of the books I have in my library.
I think this book needs more time with interesting descriptions to hold the reader in a world that’s developed and that shows it’s alive and not only some proper background for the characters. By the way, I would also have appreciatted a little more development for the main character, because she’s like thrown right in and somehow doesn’t feels real. Maybe if I had kept reading I would have seen more of her in the book and would have understand her better, but with was given at the beginning… I didn’t want to waste my time reading it when plenty of wonderful books are out there waiting to be found, sorry.

I love fantasy novels in all their forms, including urban fantasy. I’ve read dozens of novels, and and I love strong female leads that kick butt and make up their own minds. But Kate Daniels is just a beeotch. Rude, arrogant trailer trash, she reminded me most of a redneck guy in a wifebeater, particularly off-putting in a woman. She has not heart, no empathy, nothing likeable at all. I could barely swallow the first twenty pages before I put it down with disgust. And I ALWAYS finish a book, till now, no matter how bad. I would not recommend these novels to anyone.

This along with the Mercy Thompson series is a trend of fantasy romance. I’m not too keen on it. If you’re a harcore fantasy/sci-fi reader I doubt you’ll be too keen on this either. If you like romance and always wanted to see it in a fantasy setting, then this is the series for you.

I made it little more than half way through this book before I realized how dry it really was. For me, the character development was very poor and the plot seemed very thin. If you are looking for a quick and easy read then this might be something for you but if you are looking for depth and intense characterization, save your money.

Not too fast and not too slow & not too much detail and not too little — just right! The pacing and the storyline are perfected in this novel. It is a highly enjoyable read with some rather astute insights into human nature using the paranormal backdrop. Ilona Andrews has set the bar very high for first novel quality with this book. This will be a collectible book series – once she gets the second novel out! Magic Burns (Kate Daniels, Book 2)
