The N450 core works very well with movies such as Hulu. XP automatically and quickly picks up wireless connection when turned on the netbook the very first time – apparently through an Acer installed software (?) since my other XP’s don’t and Vista/7 do. No complains about its speed. Battery life is as advertised. I spent about three hours to do setup and play around. It still showed 6+ hours left. Very nice looking – both the shell and the screen. It is very quiet, too. USB slot is somewhat tight as couple other reviews said but not bad enough to consider as a con. Package has Acer seals everywhere brings confidence of a brand new unit. I am glad made this choice after several days of web research. This little book makes my 15.6″ laptop a bulky monster if traveling.

Hey guys and gals. Okay, I’ve had this machine for a week now. I will probably update this after more time has passed. I also like the small keyboard because there’s less hand and finger travel involved so I find it much easier to type.

THE BATTERY is UNREAL. READ your manuals boys and girls, ESPECIALLY the part about conditioning your battery three times. Search the internet and download the free program “CPUID Hardware Monitor”. It shows the “wear level” and capacity of your battery. VERY cool. My battery started with 10% wear level out of the box. After 3 “conditionings” as explained in the manual, I have zero wear level and today my power meter says I have 11 hours and 48 minutes to go! Each “conditioning” I did, I watched the battery’s capacity level in CPUID go up! I have NEVER seen ANYTHING like this in my life and I have had multiple laptops since 1995. The battery life is CRAZY. Obviously those numbers will go down faster as you start and run programs.

I wish they could put decent graphic cards in these netbooks. NONE of them in this price range on the market have one. But then that would also kill the battery life as well. This one will get you by with BASIC graphics handling. I can watch HD video MP4s only with Quicktime. VLC Media Player and Windows Media Player (after installing codecs for it) jitter and stutter with HD MP4 videos, Quicktime does NOT. I have run several BASIC games, Hoyle Casino 2008, MS Pinball Arcade, Virtual Pool 3 and they all seem to run good, no issues. As you have no T&L or anti-aliasing capabilities with this video card, the heavy duty 3D games stutter and jitter if they run AT ALL. After a couple days I upgraded the RAM to 2 GB to see if that would help and it did not. Basic, low graphic games run just fine. What’s funny is I watched HD video on YouTube with zero issues. I run an older version of Adobe Photoshop without any issues. Microsoft Office 2007 runs beautifully.

Overall speed. This thing flies!!! Clicking on things, opening programs, Windows start up… zooming in a map in Delorme or Microsoft mapping software… ALL wayyyyyyy faster than my 2.2 Ghz Dual Core, 4 GB RAM Windows 7 Professional laptop. How does THAT happen??? Everything just seems to happen FASTER. Is it Windows XP? I don’t know but I did WANT a netbook with Windows XP. I wanted one before you can’t buy them any longer. As it is now, you can’t buy them in stores any longer.

Overall, for $300, I LOVE this little machine and have decided I will keep it. I’ll save the HD video editing for my other laptop. Although, I have not tried it yet on this little machine. Maybe in a review update. It’s more than half the size as my other laptop and even with a case, can EASILY fit in an airplane carry-on or under a car seat. I fit MOST of the programs and files I need on the 160 GB hard drive. Too bad Windows XP does not support any larger sizes. I anticipate this little machine will be going with me everywhere I go… never leave the house without it!

    I give it 5 stars out of 5!!! It’s a keeper!!!

Added some ram, Kingston ValueRAM 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Notebook Memory (KVR667D2SO/2GR) for running Alibre. PCB Artist, MPLab, and other development tools seem to run fine on it too. I actually like the smaller keyboard, it’s easier to type b/c you don’t have to move your fingers as far :) When I switched back to my Latitude D610 it felt like I was reaching too much for keys. I do wish the home key and end key were easier to strike though, as they are smaller than the other keys and require a function key combo :( I’m impressed with the touch pad, whereas on most computers I prefer an external optical mouse, on this one the touch pad actually seems to have great response.

I have a company laptop I have to take with me on buisness trips, but IT policies make it useless for personal apps. This is a small light weight solution to my need for a 2nd (personal) computer. My wife has no laptop so it also serves her when she or we travel.

Keyboard is big enough to be practical. Wireless works as you would expect. Screen is small, but not bad as a compromise over price, weight and unit size. Battery life is great!

Upgraded it imediately to the max 2GB RAM which meant replacing the single memory module. Easy to do (one screw) although the force required to pry open the door was a bit unnerving. Amazon’s Corsair Memory VS2GSDS800D2 2GB PC2-6400 800MHz 200-pin DDR2 SODIMM Laptop Memory works perfectly.

I was able to network it to my desktop’s DVD drive for installing apps, but an external USB DVD might be more appropriate for most users.

We have not had the PC for a week yet. Out of the box, it took me an hour to get the wireless working. That should have been my first clue.

I do this kind of thing for a living so I am not a neophyte.

Frequently, and randomly, it disconnects from my wifi network. I have a wrt54gl router and a “TRENDnet 300 Mbps Wireless Easy-N-Upgrader (TEW-637AP)” (bought also thru Amazon). I also have an Acer Aspire AS1410-8804 11″ lap top with wireless draft N. This works, and sees, my wireless network (both G and N) fine. Stays connected and I get good speed.

The Aspire will ONLY see my G network. Cannot even see the N network at all.

When it connects, I have no idea how long the connection will last.

If you surf “Acer and Atheros disconnect” you will see this is not a new problem.

We are going to try to send this thing back to Acer to have them fix. We will see.

One solution is to take the thing apart and install a new, non Atheros, network card.

Not looking forward to that idea.

Be cautious. Some people all things work. Some, a bunch, not so lucky.

    I will post updates.
